At this point, all the major known GLP1 Receptor Agonist compounds have had scientific studies and trial performed (usually funded in some way by the company selling the drug), so we can easily look at the research.

While the specifics of the studies differ (ex. time people were taking the drugs, makeup of the participants, etc), there are some common threads.

Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus)

The STEP1 Trials are a great place to start for Semaglutide based drugs. The Step1 Trials found that weight change at week 68 was βˆ’14.9% with 2.4-mg semaglutide, as compared with βˆ’2.4% with placebo (estimated treatment difference, βˆ’12.4 percentage points, with a high confidence interval.

This means that Semaglutide contributed to roughly 12% percentage points of weight loss over the period.

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound)

Tirzepatide is a common and growing subset of the GLP1 drugs, Mounjaro being quite recognizable/mentioned in public.

The SURMOUNT-1 Trial is one of the most prominent trials done for Tirzepatide, and it tested various dosages, so we have some more data to compare. In this case the period measured was 72 weeks (compared to semaglutide's 68):

  • 5mg Tirzepatide caused average ~12% weight loss (15% minus placebo 3.1%)
  • 10mg Tirzepatide caused average ~16.5% weight loss (19.5% minus placebo 3.1%)
  • 15mg Tirzepatide caused average 17.9% weight loss (20.9% minus placebo 3.1%)

Liraglutide (Victoza, Saxenda)

Liraglutide, similar to the other compounds has also had trials performed, so we can look at the SCALE trial.

The SCALE trial found that after 56 weeks, participants on Liraglutide lost an average of 8% of their body weight, whereas participants given the placebo lost 2.6%. This means Liraglutide contributed to roughly 5.4% of the average weight loss.
